ESA researchers are studying putting astronauts in a state of hibernation to facilitate their access to other planets.

On Monday, the agency said its researchers had studied how hibernating would affect a crew-to-Mars mission and concluded that this could help significantly reduce the size of the spacecraft, the Associated Press reported.

Although it is not yet possible to slow down the basic metabolic rate of humans in a manner similar to that achievedHibernation in animals, the head of the teamThe research, Jennifer Ngo Anh, said the idea "isn't really so crazy."Similar methods were already being used to save victims of trauma.
